Description
To perform effective server lifecycle management, system administrators are often faced with a heterogeneous collection of hardware and software tools. Besides having to handle DVDs and USB sticks containing the lifecycle software, administrators need access to the operating system running on the managed server and also often rely on physical access to the hardware.
By integrating a comprehensive lifecycle management functionality in the firmware of the current iRMC S4, the embedded Lifecycle Management (eLCM) solution of the FUJITSU ServerView Suite allows the administrator to control lifecycle Management of PRIMERGY servers with a few mouse clicks centrally from the iRMC S4 web interface without the need of handling with physical devices.
  • Dedicated Management LAN enhances security, stability and overall performance of the managed server
The iRMC S4 handles all eLCM-related network traffic exclusively via its dedicated management LAN port. None of the system LAN ports used by the server operating system is concerned. Limiting any management related traffic to the management LAN relieves the productive LAN and beyond that helps to avoid security threats. eLCM bypasses the traditionalserver management which requires agents and managementsoftware running on the server operating system. Shifting the managementsoftware to the iRMC S4 improves the performance of the managed server. The only software that eLCM in some cases needs to be run on the server operating system is the Agentless Service component of the FUJITSU ServerView Suite. Exclusively communicating with the iRMC S4 over HTI (High Speed Transfer Interface), the Agentless Service has only a very small footprint on the server operating system, with negligible impact on the system's overall performance.
  • Comprehensive and largely automated eLCM update management via a uniform GUI
BIOS, firmware and drivers installed on a server make it difficult to keep the respective configuration up-to-date. eLCM meets this challenge in various respects. With only a few mouse clicks from the iRMC S4 web interface, you can configure and initiate the following actions: Get displayed the available updates and start and monitor the update process. These actions, which can be executed separately or combined, may be started either manually or scheduled by a timer. Beyond that, eLCM update management provides largely automated workflows for performing various kinds of updates (BIOS, firmware, drivers).
  • eLCM image management
eLCM image management allows you to download bootable ISO images onto the internal SD card of the iRMC S4 and boot the managed server from these images. Downloading and/or booting can be started from the iRMC S4 web interface manually or scheduled by a timer. Beyond that, the UEFI setup of some PRIMERGY servers allows you to directly boot the server from an image located on the iRMC S4 SD card. eLCM image managementcan handle eLCM images as well as images provided by the customer (custom images). eLCM images are special images each providing one or more eLCM functions (e.g. offline update) and are made available and advertised by Fujitsu Technology Solutions via their own repository server. An eLCM image includes one or more eLCM functions.
  • Extensive and largely automated health management with eLCM PrimeCollect
eLCM PrimeCollect in cooperation with the ServerView Agentless Service supports ServerView PrimeCollect while at the same time enhancing the standard PrimeUp functionality. eLCM PrimeCollectcollects logging data of PRIMERGY servers and stores the collected information in a ZIP file, creates and downloads PrimeCollect archives with in-band system information to the internalstorage of the iRMC S4.
